I obviously didn’t start out making chocolate in my career, in fact I was a lecturer before that. But, the idea came up one day when I saw my neighbour making chocolates. It was one of the many work at home ideas that I had at the time. But I kept it as a sideline business whilst I was still working as an online tutor cum content producer.
Initially, when we came to Cochin in 2007, I thought of supplying to some local bakeries and shops. But soon realised that it is more stress and less profitable. Then I started selling online and got good response. I simultaneously started teaching chocolate making. It was then, I realised the large gap in the market that could be filled and my entrepreneurial journey started there and I decided to start making on my own chocolate. Thus Rohini Chocolates was born in 2008. So, this wasn’t such a sudden move, it was something I was already passionate about but hadn’t up until that point thought about turning it into a business properly.
While most of the business is retail, we also do some wholesale and Internet sales. I love the creative challenge, plus I get the added bonus of making people happy—it doesn’t get better than that!
